Gladstone House
Winner of supreme award 2008 - best Wairarapa House overall
Situated at the top of the Admiral Hill, this provides panoramic views over the Wairarapa Valley and onto the Tararua Ranges. Due to the exposure of the site it is subject to some of the more severe weather conditions, which is reflected in the layout and the choice of materials for the design.
This home is constructed from plastered concrete block masonry and Hokitika schist for entrance pillars and the main fireplace, which provides a sense of strength for such an exposed site. There are three main structures which give a number of different points for outdoor entertainment. Double glazing and an underfloor heating system provide the main heating source as well as a number of vented skylights for continuity of light to the central hallway, which runs the length of the home. The master bedroom is situated as the only first floor area and provides a haven from the main family living.
The internal spaces are made up of simple shapes but the varying ceiling heights and angles give each space a unique feel. Strong use of timber has been used, from rimu skirting and architraves to demolition timber ledge and brace doors including the kitchen island bench.
The material and detail have been carefully chosen to provide an overall style of simplicity and coherence for a modern, busy family home.
